Uneven distribution of warm or cool air in the rooms of your home can be quite a concern because it means less efficiency from your HVAC that translates to a higher utility bill with less comfort. This is a common problem in some homes. Is your home experiencing this issue?

If so, you may want to consider whether register booster fans may alleviate the discomfort by improving airflow in those rooms that seem to be less favored your HVAC system.

When should you consider using a register booster fan? If your home is experiencing the following uneven air flow issues despite adjusting your thermostat accordingly, then you may be a candidate for this gadget.

  • One room may have cold and warm spots
  • A room does not cool or warm as evenly as the rest
  • A given floor of the home is not cooling or warming as the other floors
  • Too much airflow or lack of airflow in a given room or floor

In truth, more often than not the above signs tend to be symptoms of a deeper underlying issue in your HVAC system. The only way your air conditioning system can be effective and efficient in distributing warm or cooled air evenly, is when there is unobstructed air flow throughout the duct work.

So if the airflow in the duct work is wanting, sometimes installing a register booster may help in better distribution of warm or cold air into a desired space.

What is a register booster fan?

Also referred to as AC duct booster fans and heat duct booster fans, these are small units designed to push more of the air from the HVAC system ductwork into a select space such as a given room in the home that’s not cooling or heating as well as the other rooms.

A Register fan, will use it’s fan blades to pull conditioned air into a room and accomplish a favorable temperature faster.

Sometimes homeowners try to get the air flowing into problem rooms with duct boosters, but it worth noting that boosters only address the symptoms, not the root cause.

Types of duct booster fans

There are two main types of booster fans

  1. Register booster fans

Register fans can also go by the name in-floor booster fans. They are small in size and easy to install. The installation can be done on floors, walls or ceiling.

They have small fans that can be compared to a PC fan. This type can sit directly in or on the register(s) of the room or rooms that have airflow issues.

They are inexpensive and can present a simple solution to getting better air distribution on a select floor or room.

Technicians and home owners find them handy because they are available in different colors and are small in size. That’s an important factor because they can be easily matched to the décor and remain fairly inconspicuous while improving the comfort of a room by drawing better airflow into it.

They come with their own thermostat, are multi-speed and can be electronically controlled. When getting one, you want to makes sure you get a good quality register booster fan that is less noisy and less prone to burn out or frequent failure.

Are Register booster fans effective?

Most technicians and property owners find this gadget to be a simple solution in many cases of uneven distribution of ventilated air for rooms and floors with limited airflow.

A good number of people strongly feel that register fans further restrict airflow because they have to be installed in the vent register and are of the mind that this blocks the airway.

This gadget does need to be plugged on to a socket and will come with a cable

Whatever side of the divide you may be on in regard to register booster fans, it’s best to have your HVAC technician examine your ventilating system in respect to the room or floor that is either getting too much airflow or not enough.

A register booster fan may just be the simple and inexpensive option that you need to improve efficiency and comfort. Check out some of the best options available here.

  1. Mid-duct fan

After examining your HVAC system and why some rooms or floors are not getting as much cooling or heating, your technician may recommend a Mid-duct fan.

This type of booster fan is larger and heavy-duty and comes with a cylindrical fan.

The installation is more challenging and will require a HVAC technician to install.  In the installation, the unit is placed in the duct work between the HVAC source and the room or floor that has airflow issues.

It takes up the entire width of the air way by replacing a section of ductwork. For this reason, they can only be installed in situations where the HVAC ducting is accessible and exposed. This type of booster fan also requires an electrical outlet.

Alternatively, it can be hardwired but will need a relay back to the furnace. As you can see, the installation is more involving and dependent on accessibility of the duct. So it may not be applicable to some homes. You will have to get professional involved to do the installation. This option tends to have a quieter operation.

Get to the root course

Uneven cooling of select rooms by your HVAC system is an indicator of a deeper problem as we alluded to from the beginning of this post.

Register booster fans may address the symptom by improving air flow to problem rooms, but will not get to the bottom of the root course of your HVAC system’s lack of performance.

So, you may want to have your technician check for the following common and general cause of airflow issues in HVAC units;

  • Dirty and clogged filters
  • Coils and blower wheels that are dirty
  • Blocked return air registers, cracked doors and windows
  • Dampers not opened fully or obstructed by furniture
  • Leaks in ducts made by rodents or peeling duct tape

Conclusion

When these issues are resolved in your HVAC system, the uneven distribution of air on floors and rooms may just disappear. If the airflow problem does persist, a booster register fan or mid-duct fan may help with the improving of airflow to the affected room or floor.
