Have you ever heard of Microfiber? I’m pretty sure that you’ve ran by some of these products every time you make your way through the linen section of a local department store. There isn’t much contention on whether microfiber sheets are safe but when it comes to the other factors, some say sheets from microfiber are soft and comfortable; others think it’s rough and scratchy. The remaining few are those who are still undecided – primarily because they still haven’t had the chance to use it. You finding this article tells me that you’re part of the third group or what I’d personally like to call, the “still searching” for a good reason to buy microfiber sheets” group.

Lucky for you, we’ve got just the thing to help you out of your purchasing dilemma – the complete pros and cons analysis guide to buying microfiber sheets. And today’s mission is to uncover whether microfiber is a good bedding material to consider for your bedroom.

But Hey, What Is Microfiber Anyway?

Microfiber, if split into two different words would mean small (micro) filaments (fiber). It is a type of bedding material that’s made from ultra-thin and fine fibers that don’t grow naturally. That’s right microfiber, unlike cotton, is synthetically produced using polyester, nylon, or wood pulp. For something to be considered as microfiber, the fibers thickness must be =<1 denier in diameter. Something so thin cannot be produced naturally and thus the need for laboratory production. But regardless of being artificially made, microfibers still show promising potential for softness and comfort.

Microfiber vs. Cotton

We all know cotton. Our mothers, grandmothers, great-grandmothers, and ancestors have used them at one point or another. Compared to microfiber, cotton has a long standing history of providing comfort and inducing healthy slumbers for families in years past. It is the durability and crispness of cotton that really won the hearts of many. But that doesn’t mean that it’s the only best thing in the linen industry.

Many new players got introduced to the linen market in recent years – microfiber being one of them. Advanced technology have made it possible for manufacturers to make a type of fiber that’s even thinner than fine silk (1.25 deniers). And now that it’s commercialized, people have come to enjoy it at very affordable prices.

Cotton may be a classic choice but microfiber is also holding its edge over the market.

Let’s do a brief comparison of these two types of bedding material:

1. Durability

To be fair, any type of bedding material will be less durable when the quality is low. Same goes with cotton and microfiber. Microfiber, by itself, is not particularly strong or durable. However, its tight weave allows it to withstand damage caused by excessive use or improper care.

Cotton on the other hand is well-loved because of its natural ability to become softer and suppler with every wash. The downside of cotton is that it is prone to pilling, especially when the quality is low as in the case of American upland cotton.

2. Appearance

Both cotton and microfiber have strong resistance to pilling and wear – as long as they are of good quality. They also tend to get very wrinkly after wash or when one gets up out of bed in the morning. In terms of appearance, these two types of sheets can take on each other head to head. These sheets, when bought in bright colors, tend to fade after prolonged exposure to the unforgiving sun’s rays. If you’re going to buy any of these two, nothing beats a fresh, clean white!

 3. Comfort

Cotton, especially 100% pure Egyptian cotton is guaranteed to be soft – like sleeping in a baby’s cradle. But beyond just being soft, it also feels crisp and light to the skin so it really helps improve your quality of rest.

Microfiber on the other hand, also became popular because of its also soft, thin and light fabric that is tightly woven together. Because the threads used in microfiber are weaved closely together, they are also good for repelling moisture.

4. Breathability

Without much contest, cotton easily wins this round.

Microfiber, as mentioned previously, is tightly weaved and also man-made. It may not allow air to pass to and from your body as easily as high-quality cotton will. Although still a comfortable type of material to sleep in, I won’t suggest it for people who are naturally warm (warmer than the typical body heat) or for very hot and humid summer nights. They’re artificially produced so you might feel your body reacting negatively to it when push comes to shove. On the bright side, its ability to regulate moisture also makes it perfect for trapping body heat so you might want to keep one in store for when cold winter nights kick in!

So to answer your question “Are Microfiber Sheets Good, Comfortable and Safe?” I have to say that they are. Quality is great, the feel is nice, and they’re not too heavy on the pocket. Generally speaking, they’re a good buy. But just because something is good, doesn’t automatically mean it’s for you.

Get to a local store, feel the fabric yourself, and see how you like it!
